In October 2014, I was paired with a travel companion. Within minutes of conversing, we realized we shared many similarities, as retired Illinois elementary teachers. We both are world travelers; love to read; take lots of photographs; experienced a simultaneous case of gelato addiction while in Italy.
I read her Facebook posts nearly every day, even after seven years. Here is a repost from five years ago, which Facebook displayed on Jean’s account Thursday, January 13, 2022. It sounded to me like a worthy, new year’s initiative that I will enjoy keeping.
She had written, “I started a set reading time every day, to make sure I put the iPad away, turn off the TV, get a fresh cup of coffee, and throw my fleece blanket on my lap. [During the day,] I am enjoying [having] the set time to look forward to. It’s like ‘recess’ for the soul.”
Today I begin my first novel of the year: Three Weeks in Paris by Barbara Taylor Bradford. I will try to read for at least one hour, but finishing a chapter is my deciding criteria.
