Chamber of Commerce Administratior Corinne Bender submitted the following “What’s happening in Morrison?” events in Morrison, IL, for April 2014.  At the end is a notice about the May opening of the Farmers’ Market.

Enjoy a delicious PANCAKE BREAKFAST, Saturday, April 5, from 7:00 to 10:30 a.m., sponsored by the Morrison Lions Club, at DQ Grill & Chill, 200 N. Sawyer Road.  On the menu are pancakes, eggs, sausage, juice, and coffee; drive through service is available.  Good-will donations are being accepted.  Proceeds will benefit the construction of a shelter at the Morrison Sports Complex.  Supplemental funding is provided by Thrivent Financial.

Time for SPRING CLEANING!   Weekly yard waste collection for Morrison residential customers is on Mondays beginning April 7.  Materials are to be placed curbside in brown paper, yard waste bags or in containers no larger than 30 gallons.  It is recommended materials be placed out the evening before collection.  Individuals who wish to save decorations at Grove Hill Cemetery are asked to remove them no later than Sunday, April 6.  Morrison Public Works employees will be removing decorations between Monday, April 7, and Friday, April 11.  Start making plans and saving up for the Morrison Community Garage Sale Days on Friday, June 6, and Saturday, June 7.  it is sponsored by the Whiteside News Sentinel.  The Morrison Chamber of Commerce Community Clean-Up Day is Saturday, June 21.  In addition to the regular “collectors,” this year we will have on-site document shredding, sponsored by Farmers National Bank.  For more information call 815-772-3757.

A slide PRESENTATION on Israel, Jordan, and Turkey will be held at 6:30 p.m., Monday, April 7, at the Odell Public Library meeting room, 307 S. Madison Street.  The Rev. Gary Lawler of St. Anne Episcopal Church took a six-week sabbatical to study in Jerusalem.  He will talk about the historical and religious sites he visited.  There is no charge for this event presented by the Odell Friends of the Library.

YOGA with Martina 6-week Beginning/Continuing YOGA CLASSES begin Tuesday, April 8, and run through Thursday, May 15.  In yoga for beginners, participants are guided through an array of basic yoga poses designed to meet each individual’s level of ability, in a fun and relaxed atmosphere.  There is no need to be fit or flexible to start yoga!  Call 815-772-4473 to sign-up today.

First Presbyterian Church, 100 E. Lincolnway, will be serving a Free COMMUNITY DINNER on Thursday, April 10, from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m.  As part of the dinner, we will also be celebrating the 107th birthday of Gladys Ludens!  The church is handicap accessible, with an elevator to the basement serving area.  Call 815-772-3510 for more information.

Morrison United Methodist Church will hold a two-day RUMMAGE AND BAKE SALE at  200 W. Lincolnway, on Friday, April 11, and Saturday, April 12.  The times and costs are Friday from 12:00 to 5:00 p.m.–$2 per bag and 50¢ per item, and Saturday from 8:00 to 11:00 a.m.–$1 per bag and 25¢ per item.  There also will be delicious bake sale items available, priced as marked.

Morrison Christian Reformed Church, 300 W. South Street, will have their SPRING FRIENDSHIP BREAKFAST on Friday, April 11 from 9:00 to 10:30 a.m. in the fellowship room.  Bring a friend and plan to “sit and visit” with others.  There is no charge, but we ask that those who atttend bring an item for the local Food Pantry.  Cleaning supplies and hygiene products are in demand.

Join Resthave Retirement & Nursing Home, 408 Maple Avenue, as they host their Annual VOLUNTEER BREAKFAST, Friday, April 11, at 8:30 a.m. The breakfast is held to show appreciation to those that volunteer their time at the home.  No invitations will be sent, so please RSVP by Tuesday, April 8, if you plan to attend.

The Whiteside Forum will present “Human Rights:  Indigenous People, their Rights and Perspective,” a DISCUSSION on Friday, April 11, starting at 7:30 p.m.  Our guest panel of speakers includes:  Isabel Scarborough, Professor of Anthropology at Parkland College; Beverly Smith, Assistant Director of the U of I Native American House; Bryce Elliott, who will provide insight into the Maori culture.  This event will be held in the Community Room of the Odell Public Library, 307 S. Just in time for Easter, the Lions Club Annual Rose Day Sale is now through April 11.  To order a dozen beautiful ROSES, contact any Lions Club member or call Jim Blakemore, 815-772-744; Flora Stralow, 815-772-4874; Bob Smith, 815-499-9954.  Cost is $15/dozen with a delivery date of Good Friday, April 18, and Saturday, April 19.  Proceeds help support the Morrison Lions Club scholarship award.

“Bethesda Blaze”  Relay For Life Team, along with support from one of their sponsors,  DQ Grill & Chill, will be serving BREAKFAST on Saturday, April 12 from 7:00 to 10:00 a.m. at DQ Grill & Chill, 200 N. Sawyer Road.  Breakfast choices will include scrambled eggs, pancakes and sausage, biscuits and sausage gravy, juice and coffee.  Come and make a donation and enjoy a delicious breakfast with family and friends.   All proceeds from the event will go to the American Cancer Society-Relay For Life event of Whiteside County.

First Presbyterian Church and the Christian Reformed Church will hold a City-wide PAPER DRIVE on Saturday, April 12, from 9:00 to 11:30 a.m. at the Christian Reformed Church parking lot, 300 W. South Street.  Items collected include bundled papers, books, magazines, and broken down corrugated boxes.  Items collected benefit Self-Help in Sterling, IL.

Come out and enjoy some great, local dancing talent at Jennifer’s Dance Center’s SPRING PERFORMANCE, “Let it Go,” on Saturday, April 12, at the Morrison High School Auditorium, 643 Genesee Avenue, with shows at 1:00 and 7:00 p.m.  The studio offers ballet, pointe, jazz, clogging, Irish, and contemporary disciplines for students ages 3 through adult.  Tickets are available at the door for $12.  For more information, call 815-772-4108.

Timber Lake Playhouse presents “CASINO NIGHT at The Saloon” on Saturday, April 12 from, 6:00 to 9:00 p.m., at The Rafters, 9426 W. Wagner Road, in Lena, IL.  The Western Saloon-themed evening will benefit Timber Lake Playhouse.  It includes buffet dinner from 6:00 to 8:00, dessert bar, 16 gaming tables with professional dealers, live entertainment by Jason Stone beginning at 9:00, and prizes at the end of the night.  The all-inclusive ticket for Casino Night is $50 and includes $1000 worth of play gambling money.  Tickets should be purchased in advance by calling 815-244-2035.
