This is a winter to remember. In all my years as an educator, I have never had more than five snow days in a school year. With the goal of making sure our students are safe, we have been forced to cancel school because of cold temperatures and because of snow conditions.
With the large number of snow days in January 2014, there has been concern about lost instructional time in the middle of the school year. Because of this concern, the staff was polled, and a large majority indicated a preference for making up three of the snow days prior to the end of school. The survey results showed that:
- 75.1% of staff preferred to make up a snow day on Monday, February 17
- 59.6% of staff preferred to make up a snow day on Friday, April 18 with one-hour early dismissal
- 76.8% of staff preferred to make up a snow day on Monday, April 21.
On Tuesday, February 4, at a Special Board Meeting, the Board of Education approved the recommended changes to the 2013-2014 calendar. These changes mean that the last day of school for students will be Friday, May 30, rather than Wednesday, June 4.
In making this decision, there was also communication with the Morrison Ministerial Alliance to make sure that Good Friday religious observations are not impacted. To accommodate this change, the Crosswalk will now begin after school is dismissed rather than at noon.
If a parent already has purchased non-refundable reservations, please notify the office where your child attends school in Morrison before Friday, February 14. The District will work with families to minimize the impact of these changes on students and families.
