Patrons should notice the comfortable climate inside Happy Joe’s, 109 W. Main Street, Morrison, IL, due to a recent purchase by owners Kevin and Lynn Kenady. They bought a new air conditioner from Workman Heating & Cooling, 15825 Lincoln Road, Morrison.
“[The old one] half-died. It was 25 years old,” Lynn Kenady commented. “We figured we got good use out of it. Workman sold the first one, too.”
The 100 block of W. Market Street was blocked to traffic during the aerial transport of two weighty units. The old AC weighed 1200 pounds, but the new one was 950. They have the same capacity. Installation on Tuesday morning, July 30, 2013, was witnessed by a few onlookers, who recorded the event on mobile devices. It was quite a show!
Jeff and Jim Workman and Jerry Rose uninstalled the old AC, and B & B crane operator Jack Brearton lifted the massive, metal rectangular prism from two 6″ x 6″ wooden beams. A quarter-of-a-century ago, he had placed it there. Brearton took direction from Jim Workman, the ground man, as did Jeff and Jerry above the street. The 1200-pound unit was removed to a Workman trailor.
Six high-voltage power lines above Market Street complicated the dangerous work. ComEd had covered those electrical wires to prevent contact. However, there was little room to maneuver after lifting the AC’s over the wires.
The new one, in these photos, swayed perilously close to the lines. It needed to be steadied by Brearton, while he v-e-r-y patiently lowered it into position atop the 6-inch wide beams. Jeff and Jerry anchored the new unit and connected the mechanicals.
