The Morrison Lions Recycle Day event is back.  It is Saturday, April 24, 2021, from 9:00 a.m. until noon, at the Whiteside County Fairgrounds, 201 W. Winfield Street, for Morrison, IL, zip code residents only.

Flyers listing items being accepted have been posted in windows of Morrison businesses.  Information is available online through the Facebook pages for the Morrison Illinois Lions Club; Morrison Lions Foundation; City of Morrison; Morrison Chamber of Commerce.  Check the Morrison Lions Club website at www.e-clubhouse.org/sites/morrisonil/contact.php.  Click on the Calendar button; then click on the top “View Flyer.”  See the partial listing below of items to be accepted.

Due to COVID-19, for everyone’s safety, we require residents to remain in their vehicles at all times.  Items should be easily accessible by volunteers from a trunk or truck bed.

2018RecycleLineHelp Keep Morrison Beautiful by cleaning out unwanted items, and recycling them.  Because of generous monetary donations from TBK Bank and 1st Gateway Credit Union, residents can conveniently dispose of the following items for free:  appliances, scrap metal, newspapers, cardboard boxes, magazines (no books or catalogs), aluminum cans, plus many other items.

Most electronics will be accepted for free also.  However, due to the cost of recycling TVs and computer monitors, there a flat fee of $20 each, regardless of size.  The fee for each microwave will be $10. There is a limit of five TVs/computer monitors; only cash will be accepted.  Boy Scouts of America Troop 96, Key Club, and FFA students will assist.  City of Morrison, Yarbrough Appliances, Moring Disposal, and Resthave Care & Rehabilitation also will provide support.  Thank you to all of our sponsors and community partners for helping provide this service to Morrison residents.

Morrison Police Department will collect ammunition, old prescriptions, pet medications, supplements, and OTC medications, emptied into a clear plastic bag with no bottles.  No liquids will be accepted.  Eye glasses, cell phones, hearing aids, and keys will be accepted by Lions.  American flags are also accepted for the American Legion.  CarQuest-Morrison Auto Supply staff will collect vehicle batteries (including 6-, 12-, and 14-volt lead acid batteries) from cars, mowers, motorcycles, boats, RVs, and heavy equipment.  Used oil and antifreeze will be accepted at Kunes Country Auto Group Morrison, 627 E. Lincolnway, Morrison, during regular business hours.

The Morrison Lions Club recently made an annual contribution to Lions of Illinois Foundation for Diabetes Awareness.  Diabetes is a leading cause of blindness.  We welcomed a speaker to our Tuesday, April 6, meeting.  Lion Flora Stralow was in charge of the program; Nora Wenzel, Program Director for Big Brothers/Big Sisters for Whiteside County, gave a presentation.  This group is a one-on-one mentoring program, especially helpful for boys and girls in a single-parent home and/or living in low-income households.  Mentors are volunteers, who work with their “match” on coping skills, behavior, self-esteem, and school attendance.  Mentors and children meet two-to-four times a month.  They play games, read together, attend events the youth are interested in, and cook or bake together.  Big Brothers/Big Sisters is a very worthwhile organization.
