Bernard “Bun” Houzenga, 91, of Resthave Care & Rehabilitation in Morrison, IL died Sunday, April 4, 2021, at Resthave Care & Rehabilitation.
Bun was born December 24, 1929, in Ustick Township, IL, to Burt and Anna (Buikema) Houzenga. He was educated in the Crouch School in rural Whiteside County. Bun served in the U. S. Army from 1951 to 1953, where he toured in Germany. On April 20, 1956, he married Frances Jean VanderVinne in Fulton, IL. She died June 5, 2018. Bun grew up farming and continued farming throughout his life. He was a member of First Reformed Church in Fulton. His passion was farming, and he had quite a collection of toy tractors. He also enjoyed woodworking.
Survivors include daughters, Deb (Bill) Swanson of Morrison and Sheila (Mark) Richmond of Tampico, IL; son, Dewey (Melissa) Houzenga of Morrison; many grand- and great-grandchildren; sisters, Delores Stuart of Morrison, Bernice Kyarsgaard of Camanche, IA, Ardella Houzenga of Savanna, IL, and Jean Williams of Thomson, IL; brother, LaVerne Houzenga of Clinton, IA.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Frances; daughter, in infancy, Rhonda Houzenga; sister, Darlene Ashby; brother, Clifford Houzenga; sister-in-law, Sylvia Houzenga; brothers-in-law, Ervin Stuart, Fay Ashby, George Kyarsgaard, and Robert Williams.
Visitation will be from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m., Thursday, April 8, 2021, at the Fulton Chapel of the Bosma-Renkes Funeral Home.
There will be private Funeral Service. Rev. Chuck Huckaby of First Reformed Church in Fulton, IL, will officiate the service.
Interment with Military Honors will be in Fulton Township Cemetery, Fulton, IL.
A memorial has been established.
