October 31 always creates excitement for young and old alike, as they anticipate the fun and scary activities that accompany Halloween. The year of 2020 has forced many adjustments to activities. Halloween 2020 turned out to be no exception. COVID-19 restrictions have forced trick-or-treating procedures to be changed to protect all parties. To be safe many youngsters were kept at home and missed the treats that Halloween offers.
While acknowledging the situation, Sara Mahoney suggested to Amanda Cook the idea of delivering treats to the homes of youngsters that are unable to make the trick-or-treat trek within Morrison, IL. Cook put her organizational talents to work and posted the idea on social media. She requested readers to volunteer to deliver treats to the addresses of the isolated youth.
Parents immediately reacted by submitting addresses of children that would greatly appreciate this special effort. It would provide children the treats that would have eluded them otherwise. Within hours, the list grew to over 20 homes housing 50-plus kids. The list was placed on Facebook. Deliveries were made during the assigned community hours for trick-or-treating, 4:00 to 7:00 p.m., on Saturday evening.
It only took a few hours of time and the heart of a caring community. Halloween 2020 remained a day to remember for many youngsters.
Editor’s note: Sally and Jerry Lindsey delivered candy to Annabelle and Isaac Blevins at the Editor’s house. Parents Hillary and Marshall dressed up, too. Other roving, treat dispensers were Jennifer and Jamie White (complete with flashing, Morrison Fire Department vehicle lights.) A third, unidentified “candy bomber” gifted the family.
