VetDayEagleOn Monday, November 11, 2019, the annual Veterans Day observance will begin at 10:45 a.m., at Veterans Park and Memorial in Grove HiIl Cemetery, High Street, Morrison, IL.  American Legion Post 328 will conduct a short remembrance service.

At 10:55, Jerry Brearton will explain the significance of the World War I Armistice (cessation of fighting on land, sea, and air between the Allies and their opponent, Germany) and why we “face the East” during the observation.

Morrison Fire Department will sound the City-wide alarm at 11:00 for one minute.  Legionnaires will fire a round of three volleys, and “Taps” will be played by Carolyn Aiken.

The Armistice came into force at Paris, France, time “at the 11th hour, of the 11th day, of the 11th month,” 1918.  This marked a victory for the Allies and a defeat for Germany, but it was not formally a surrender.

Although the Armistice ended the fighting on the Western Front, it had to be prolonged three times until the Treaty of Versailles, [France,] was signed on June 28, 1919.  The terms took effect on January 10, 1920.
