The American Legion Post 328 in Morrison, IL, installed a Flag Drop Box, for U. S. Flags that have served their useful purpose. This includes tattered, faded, ripped, stained, or torn flags. Collected flags will be burned during Post 328’s annual U. S. Flag Retirement Ceremony, held each September. The ceremony includes several readings, rifle volleys, and “Taps.” Other flags (POW/MIA, Illinois, etc.) that are retired may also be turned in.
Deposit old flags in the white box outside the Post, 306 E. Main Street.
The Flag Drop Box is a sturdy, steel, powder coated box with a trap type drop door. It was purchased with donated money for Funeral Honors Services performed by Post 328. Donations bequeathed or donated by the fallen veterans’ families are utilized to support uniform maintenance, upkeep, and such appropriate things as a flag drop box. Periodically the Post burns funeral flags as a tribute to a family member that is downsizing or such.
A few healthy donations recently contributed greatly. The monies honored veterans Dykhuizen, Stoudt, Steien, Skeeter Jones, Fields, Red Houzenga, and Joe Klimson.
Additionally, Post 328 sells new 3′ x 5′ U. S. Flags for $20. To purchase a flag or present one as a gift, please contact Commander Terry Jones at 815-499-6288 or Sergeant-at-Arms Jerry Brearton at 717-814-8844. Assistance in installing or displaying a flag is available from Legionnaires as well.
