April 9 Odell Movie “The Maltese Falcon”

TheMalteseFalconThere’s nothing like a great mystery, and “The Maltese Falcon” fills the bill!  One of Hollywood’s classic film mysteries will be shown at Odell Public Library, 307 S. Madison Street, Morrison, IL, on Tuesday, April 9, 2019.  Beginning at 2:00 p.m., the film stars Humphrey Bogart, Mary Astor, and Peter Lorre.  It is directed by John Huston, who directed over 40 movies.

It begins in 1941 in San Francisco, CA, at a detective agency, Spade and Archer.  The two men are partners, but Sam Spade doesn’t like Miles Archer much.  The action begins with the arrival of a beautiful woman by the name of Miss Wonderly, played by Mary Astor.  By that night, everything is changed.  Archer is dead, as is a man named Floyd Thursby.  It seems as though dangerous men surround Miss Wonderly.

Her only hope of protection comes from Sam Spade, played by Humphrey Bogart.  However, he becomes a suspect in one or both murders.  More danger is yet to come.  It is all because of the lust for a jeweled statuette:  The Maltese Falcon.

This story originated from the pen of Dashiell Hammett; Director Huston adapted it into film.  When the movie opens, the facts are completely obscure.  Slowly bits and pieces fall together as a monstrous, but logical, intrigue of International proportions is revealed.  Much of the quality of the picture lies in its excellent revelation of character.

“Bogart plays a shrewd, tough detective with a mind like a blade, a temperament that sometimes betrays him, and a code of morals which is coolly cynical,” (originally published in the Hollywood Reporter September 1941.)

Come and enjoy one of Hollywood’s best film, director, and actors.  This movie has it all, plus popcorn and a drink.

There is no charge, but the library greatly appreciates all donations.
