On Monday, March 25, 2019, from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m., The Whiteside Forum presents Philip G. Millhouse, PhD, RPA, in the Odell Public Library Program Room, 307 S. Madison Strteet, Morrison, IL.
Dr. Philip Millhouse, Registered Professional Archaeologist of Red Gates Archaeology, will speak to us and answer questions about “Native American People in Northwestern Illinois.”
His talk will include a general culture history (including lead mining); discussion of preservation and archaeology work in Jo Davies County; present efforts to engage with contemporary Nations, concerning the stewarding of their past.
Dr. Millhouse’s presentation is based on his research and work at the Wapello Land and Water Reserve. Wapello is what Hanover, IL, was originally called, named for the chief of the Fox Indians, one of whose villages was located here.
Many know this land as the “John Chapman Archaeological Site,” where the University of Illinois in 2003 excavated significant artifacts from two different American Indian cultures, dating back to A.D. 1050.
Based on its significance as a meshing point of two Native American cultures (Meskwaki and Ho-Chunk), this 79-acre site, south of Hanover, was accepted into the National Register of Historic Places.
The Whiteside Forum, established in 1985, is a nonpartisan, not-for-profit community group which sponsors presentations and discussions of issues of importance and interest to the public. Issues chosen for conferences have an international dimension as well as local interest and importance.
