Attention, Illinois High School students at Fulton, Milledgville, Morrison, Prophetstown, and West Carroll. Sauk Valley Community College is offering these students an opportunity to earn dual credits. Beginning this fall, students can take up to four College courses while attending High School. Two classes will be offered in the fall, and two in the spring.
Steve Nunez, Ed.D., is Vice President of Academics and Student Services at Sauk Valley Community College, in Dixon, IL. He reported, “Last fall, I sat down with Principals and Superintendents of local high schools that are located in the NW corner of Sauk’s Community College District. After a fruitful discussion, it was decided that we would…offer transferable General Education, college classes at Morrison High School (essentially a SVCC satellite location) and allow…students from surrounding high schools to send their students for that class, or [to] connect remotely from their own high school….We chose Morrison High School, as it has a central location, and they have a dedicated classroom for Sauk’s dual credit [classes.]”
[SVCC instructors] will teach Monday-through-Friday at Morrison High School, 643 Genesee Avenue, Morrison, IL, during first period. One class will run Monday and Wednesday; the second class will run Tuesday and Thursday. Classes will alternate on Fridays.
In fall 2019, they will offer ENG 101 (English Composition) and PSY 103 (Introduction to Psychology.) In spring 2020, they will offer ENG 103 (English Composition) and MAT 204 (Elementary Statistics.)
- Each class will earn high school students three college credits.
- These General Education credits can be transferred to all Illinois public institutions, under the “Illinois Articulation Agreement.”
- Four classes (12 credits) transfer “as a package.”
- Books are a separate expense.
Sauk courses cost $146 per credit hour, or $438 per class. Four courses–one semester–regularly would cost $1752. However, Nunez explained there are discounts for those taking dual credit classes during high school.
If the student qualifies for free lunch, the tuition will be $36.50 per credit hour, or $109.50 per class.
If the student qualifies for reduced lunch, the tuition will be $73 per credit hour, or $219 per class.
If the family has no financial need, the tuition will be $109.50 per credit hour, or $328.50 per class.
Morrison High School Principal Kay Harwood stated a minimum of 14 students are needed for Sauk to bring dual credit classes to Morrison; the limit is 30 students. Seniors during 2019-2020 will be given preference. Students will be able ‘skype in’ remotely and talk to the teacher in real time. Morrison students can register at Sauk and take [other] classes online now.”
