See a Physical Therapist With No Physician Referral

Posted by

In August 2018, Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner signed a new law eliminating the requirement for a physician referral to see a physical therapist.  Illinois was one of just six States still requiring a referral.  In other states the easier access to physical therapists has been shown to decrease overall healthcare costs and, in some cases, shorten the recovery for patients with orthopedic injuries.

We at Rock Valley Physical Therapy in Morrison, IL, are excited to serve you, your family, and our community under this new law.  Our commitment is to continue collaborating with physicians and other healthcare providers in the area, to offer great care sooner with fewer obstacles.  We believe the easier access will eliminate additional costs and avoid delays for you getting the care you need.

What should you know about this new law?

  • In the case of a future injury, pain, or strain, you should expect to be scheduled with one of our therapists within a day or two, to start your recovery.
  • Your therapist will notify your healthcare provider within five days of starting PT, as required by the new law.
  • Your therapist will refer you to another provider if physical therapy is not appropriate for your condition, or if no progress is made after ten visits or 15 business days.
  • Worker’s compensation and Medicaid are among the insurances still requiring a referral.  We are happy to verify this with your insurance company and always suggest double-checking coverage yourself.

Physical therapists treat a variety of orthopedic conditions ranging from low back, shoulder, and knee pain, to sprains and strains.  Many therapists are specially trained to help patients with headaches, dizziness, balance issues, and chronic pain.
