The Continental Congress, in a steamy, hot room in Philadelphia, signed our Declaration of Independence in 1776. Odell Public Library Friends will present the musical, “1776” on Tuesday, July 10, 2018, at 2:00 p.m. The film will be shown in the Odell Public Library Program Room, 307 S. Madison Street, Morrison, IL.
“1776” depicts the days leading up to this momentous decision. The film stars William Daniels as John Adams, Howard Da Silva as Ben Franklin, and Ken Howard as Thomas Jefferson.
While General George Washington is fighting on the battlefield, the Continental Congress piddles its time over trivial matters and refuses to debate the question of American Independence. John Dickinson of Pennsylvania, who wants to reconcile with England, opposes the abrasive John Adams of Massachusetts–the leader of the independence movement.
After heated discussions, the question is called for a vote, without a majority of positive votes present. The vote ends in a tie between the Colonies, with New York abstaining as it does in every vote. Adams and Franklin state the need for a declaration to be written describing their grievances. A committee is appointed and led by Thomas Jefferson.
The Declaration is written, read, debated, and amended–much to Adams’ increased anxiety. The heated debate reaches a head, when the Southern delegates walk out, because a clause on slavery is not removed. Franklin appeals to Adams that they first achieve the vote on independence and the formation of a Nation, and leave the slavery issue for later.
