Sunny skies and an afternoon temperature of 95° became two ingredients in a Morrison, IL, business venture to sell flavored shaved ice. The third ingredient was one youth’s desire to use the Dan and Amanda Cook family’s Margaritaville Maker. Their son had been wanting to implement this advanced, frozen drink technology for a while.
“Entrepreneurs” is how Landon Cook, 11, described himself and business partner Jaxon Yaklich, age “nine, almost ten.” The younger boy is the son of Dr. Bradley and Elizabeth Yaklich. The boys demonstrated the procedure. Yaklich took a bag of ice from the cooler and opened it. Cook scooped out the proper amount and deposited ice into the top of the machine.
“First you have to shave the ice [cubes],” he said. Yaklich measured the prepared Kool-aid from a pitcher and poured it into the bottom of the machine. Ice chips and flavored water were then combined and poured into a paper, takeaway cup.
They set up their cold drink stand in the Cook driveway at 15595 Hazel Road after 2:00 p.m., on Monday, June 18, 2018. The photo was taken at 3:20, with Yaklich, left, and Cook toasting their Shaved Ice success.
