Congresswoman Cheri Bustos will participate in Memorial Day ceremonies in Rock Island, Rockford, and Elizabeth, IL, over the Memorial Day weekend.
First, on Saturday, May 26, 2018, at 10:30 a.m., in Rock Island, Congresswoman Bustos will present replacement military medals to the family of deceased WWII veteran, John Gavin, of Illinois. Gavin’s son, Don, contacted Bustos’s office for assistance, in tracking down military records and service medals that his father had not previously received. Among the many replacement medals are a Purple Heart, Bronze Star Medal, and a Marksman Badge and Rifle Bar.
Then, on Monday, May 28, at 10:30 a.m., in Rockford, she will speak at Veterans Memorial Hall, to honor the sacrifices given by brave men and women from Winnebago County. Bustos has fought for legislation to rename local Post Offices after soldiers from Illinois’ 17th Congressional District, who lost their lives in the line of duty.
This week, Congresswoman Bustos introduced and testified on her bipartisan, “Gold Star Spouses Leasing Relief Act.” This would allow surviving military spouses to break their leases without penalty, in the aftermath of losing their spouse in service to our Nation.
Finally, on Monday, May 28, at 2:00 p.m., in Elizabeth, Congresswoman Bustos will speak at the Elizabeth Memorial Day Dedication at the Elizabeth Veterans Memorial Site. Following her remarks, she will have the privilege of presenting Congressional Records to the families of three trailblazing women who honorably served in the military.
