GoliathvsCoomberProf. Matthew J. M. Coomber demonstrates that he is a taller giant than Goliath was.  The Whiteside Forum hosts Prof. Coomber, Associate Professor of Biblical Studies at St. Ambrose University, Davenport, IA, on Thursday, February 22, 2018, at 6:30 p.m.  The location is the Program Room of Odell Public Library, 307 S. Madison Street, Morrison, IL.

His program is titled “Genocide, Rebellion, and God in Nazi Germany.”  As we continue our exploration of “Politics,” please join us for the presentation and question-and-answer period that follows.  The event is free to the general public.

Prof. Coomber leads a short-course, study-abroad class in Germany and the Czech Republic.  It is also titled “Genocide, Rebellion, and God in Nazi Germany.”  He will share his and his students’ travel experiences with us.

Dr. Coomber’s primary areas of teaching and research focus on how Biblical texts interact with the cultures and societies into which they are adopted, both past and present.  There is particular emphases on economics, social-justice movements, and the arts.  With a focus on marginalized voices, his courses emphasize how the ancient stories of the Hebrew Bible/Old Testament continue to find relevance, in the lives of people whose cultures, societies, and worldviews differ greatly from those of the Biblical authors.

Coomber has studied and taught in Europe, Canada, Japan, and India and has a background in Buddhist Studies and the Sanskrit language.  He is an ordained Episcopal Priest and works to bridge his academic and spiritual life with his human-rights concerns, through work at the Center and Library for the Bible and Social Justice, as well as in various other endeavors.
