Weather is always a factor for the B-rrry Scurry; no race has been cancelled due to weather. Key elements have evolved, such as the use of chip timing. Participants love to know their times for the race. Timer Jeff Castro has up-to-the-minute technology that gives a quick printout of the participant’s time, placing, and pace.
Although results arrive quicker, the four-mile distance continues to be a challenge for even the fastest runners. The woman and man who set a new course record receive a $100 prize. 2017 winners were Kelley Timmerman of Geneseo, IL, in a time of 27:05, and Mike Behr of Aurora, IL, in a time of 22:24.
The B-rrry Scurry is the first race in the Mississippi River Challenge Medal series. Started in 2016 and sponsored by Clinton Hy-Vee, the Pam Pray Run in April and the Clinton Half Marathon Races make up the three races. Walkers and runners complete to earn the large and colorful Mississippi River Challenge medal.
The B-rrry Scurry Committee works hard to make the race “one of the best little races in the Midwest!” Race Director Ann Eisenman commented, “The B-rrry Scurry 4-Mile course is flat and fast, which the runners and walkers love in the middle of winter. Packet Pickup is easy, and our B-rrry Bistro is full of fruit and homemade cookies….Our generous sponsors provide funding for the great race shirts, in-kind donations, and dozens of door prizes.”
Eisenman raved about the community support stating, “It is the dozens of Volunteers who make our race run smooth. People help inside and out and are always so friendly to the participants, coming from as far away as North Dakota, North Carolina, and New York. The City of Clinton welcomes the participants: City employees work to clear off the roads; the Police and Sheriff Departments man the intersections: the community is very friendly. Based on our annual survey, we know people enjoy the post-race activities as well. Our Post-Race Party at Legends Sports Bar, with live music by the Slough Buoys, is legendary! We want everyone to be safe and to have a great time, while supporting the students of Clinton Community College!”
The B-rrry Scurry began in 1981 as a fundraiser for scholarships for CCC students. Today, 70 students received more than $42,000 of scholarships through the years. Thanks to the many runners and walkers who have braved the cold, the B-rrry Scurry scholarships have grown from that initial year, when one student received $300, to five students now receiving $800 scholarships each. The Jim Thyne Memorial Scholarship honors one of the early race Directors.
