The film stars Jimmy Stewart and Margaret Sullavan in a feel-good 1940 romantic comedy. Set in a small gift shop in Budapest, the shop becomes a microcosm of life, complete with quiet joys and bitter disappointments.

Alfred Kralik (Jimmy Stewart) is the Senior Salesman in a long-established Budapest, Hungary, gift shop, owned by the likable and kindly Hugo Maturschek. Alfred has been there for nine years and is very good at his job. One day a young woman, Klara Novak (Margaret Sullavan), comes into the shop looking for a job. They don’t really have a position available, but she impresses Matuschek with her skills and is hired.

Alfred and Klara don’t especially like each other, but unbeknownst to either of them, they have been corresponding anonymously with each other, after answering newspaper ads. On the day they are to meet, Alfred is fired for reasons that are not clear to him. The reason is that Matuschek wrongly suspects him of having an affair with his wife.

That evening as Alfred enters the designated Café, he sees that Klara is the one with whom he has been corresponding. Alfred makes an up an excuse to Klara for being at the Café. Soon, Matuschek realizes his error and rehires Alfred as his manager.

Now the question is, what does Alfred decide to do with his knowledge that the wonderfully clever, witty, and cultured woman he has been corresponding with is Klara?

There is no charge for the film, but donations are most appreciated and greatly benefit the monthly movies.
