SavannaHistSocietySmallThe Savanna Historical Society is pleased to offer a much requested program. On Saturday, October 7, 2017, at 2:00 p.m., at the Savanna Museum and Cultural Center, 406 Main Street, Savanna, IL, a program on the history of the Savanna Army Depot will be given. The presentation will be narrated by Cindy Irwin and Jo Carey, retirees of the Savanna Army Depot.

Included will be an overview of the history of the Depot through its closure in 2000. Presenters will share the current state of progress of cleaning up and transferring the property to a local redevelopment authority and the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

Irwin spent 33 years in various ammunition jobs at the Depot. She started as a Quality Assurance Specialist and was the Chief of Ammunition Operations at the time of closure. She then worked as the Commanders Representative and Site Manager for several years, through the closure process. Carey worked in the IT department for 18 years. Shet was active and worked in the environmental cleanup and closure office for 15 years, after the Depot closed.

Included will be several photos of the early years of the Depot as well as pictures of the various cleanups that have been conducted. The speakers will briefly discuss current tenants and businesses/landowners at the Depot and the role of the Local Redevelopment Authority in the transfer and closure process.

It is hoped that many retirees will come and provide their stories and knowledge of the history of the Savanna Army Depot to add to the program.

A donation of $8 would be appreciated.
