Michael R. Engelkens, Sr., of Sterling, IL, passed away Thursday, June 29, 2017, at CGH Medical Center.
He was born in Kewanee, IL, on November 10, 1951, to Edd and Susan (Welch) Engelkens.
Michael honorably served his Country through his early years in the U. S. Navy. He was an avid NASCAR fan and loved to cook. Michael was an Executive Chef at several restaurants and resorts. He loved to spend time with his family and grandkids. Michael was very quick with a joke and enjoyed spreading smiles on the faces of everyone around him.
Michael married Tammy Smith on October 10, 2008, and she survives in Sterling, IL. Also surviving are his children, Michael R. Engelkens, Jr. (Shelly) from Erie, IL, and Tammy Engelkens (Rick Gallegos) from Sterling; several step-children; eight grandchildren; one great-grandchild; brothers Edd Engelkens (Paulette) from Erie, Ricki Engelkens (Kayla) from Morrison, IL; sisters Pil Scott (Jerry) from Morrison, Nancy Wallander (Tom) from Cedar Rapids,IA, Linda Fellows, from Florida, Debra Lowery (Ted) from Morrison, Trudy Eads, from Postville, IA; many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Darrell Engelkens; one grandchild.
Cremation rites were accorded.
Graveside services will be Monday, July 3, 2017, in Lyndon, IL, Cemetery at 11:00 a.m. A luncheon will follow from noon to 2:00 p.m., at 1st Baptist Church, 406 Maple Avenue, Morrison, IL.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made at the luncheon or mailed to First Trust & Savings Bank, 700 Main Street, Erie IL 61250, C/O Michael R. Engelkens, Sr. Memorial Fund.
McDonald Funeral Home and Crematory in Rock Falls assisted the family.
