EMS Department Sponsors ECG Trainings

Posted by

On Wednesday, May 31, and Thursday, June 1, 2017, the Morrison Community Hospital EMS Department sponsored a special training, to teach participants about accurate Electrocardiogram electrode placement and develop expertise on reading the results.

An electrocardiogram, also called an ECG or EKG, is a simple, painless test that detects and records your heart’s electrical activity. An ECG can show

  • how fast your heart is beating
  • whether the rhythm of your heartbeat is steady or irregular
  • the strength and timing of the electrical impulses passing through each part of your heart.

The 55 participants gained a deeper understanding of ECG readings and how to place the leads to improve the accuracy of those results.

The class was taught by renowned speaker Tim Phalen. He has been able to provide 12-lead education to over 50,000 providers in the U. S., Canada, and 11 countries overseas. Participants frequently state that they learned more about ECG’s in one day, than they had in all the previous years.

The American Heart Association, in the 1997 Textbook of Advanced Cardiac Life Support, recognized Phalen and acknowledged that some of his teaching strategies were utilized in their section on 12-lead ECG interpretation.

Thank you to Morrison Community Hospital EMS Director Steve Paulsen for acquiring a grant to fund this class. We also want to thank Super Wash, Inc. for providing their training room for this class.
