Odell’s Hungry Caterpillar Is Now a Beautiful Butterfly

Posted by

odellbutterflyDuring the month of April, the Friends of Odell Public Library helped sponsor a campaign to

  • replace worn-out books in the children’s section
  • add new titles.

In addition, people could furnish needed supplies for story time, such as construction paper, glue dots, hand sanitizer, and Kleenex.  Puppets, games, LEGO sets and supplies for the new children’s kitchen were posted on Amazon wish lists.

The children’s kitchen is now well-equipped with items:

  • donated sewn aprons
  • canned foods
  • toy Mixmaster
  • condiment set
  • coffee maker
  • picnic basket filled with everything for a doll’s picnic.

The Thursday night Story Time area is stocked with supplies and a Big Book Cube to both display and store books.  The much-loved and utilized rocking chair was repaired, and a puppet theater was made and decorated.

The Garden Club gave money for garden-themed books, and the Kiwanis made a generous donation.  Individuals and families contributed gifts of $5, $15, $50, and $100 or even more.  One child donated a dollar from his own little wallet.

With gifts amounting to almost $1400, the tattered and well-read Dr. Seuss set will be replaced, as will the Berenstain Bears and others.  With the remaining monies, new books and games will be bought.

Odell Public Library and its Friends thank everyone for such generosity!

Library staff members, left-to-right, Lisa Boles, Katie Rider (and friend), and President of the Friends group, Anne Frame, verify that the caterpillar turned into a butterfly, which was created on April 27, 2017, by children at the Thursday evening story time.

Half of the Very Hungry Caterpillar is visible, with donated supplies and play kitchen items in the background.
