glennmillerposter 700x560Odell Public Library is presenting “The Glenn Miller Story” for their movie in the month of May. This movie, a time trip to those years when the Glenn Miller band ruled the charts and the airwaves, will be shown on Tuesday, May 9, 2017, at 2:00 p.m.  The Odell Public Library is located 307 S. Madison Street, Morrison, IL.

The film is a touching musical biography filled with both charm and his music.  Starring are the charming and genial Jimmy Stewart, as Glenn Miller, and the “girl-next door,” June Allyson as his wife, Helen.  The film traces his progress from trombonist and arranger to bandleader.  Helen, both supportive and inspirational, finances Glenn to start his own band.  Also featured in the film are Frances Langford, Gene Krupa, and Louis Armstrong.

The pop music styles of the 20’s were getting ready for the Big Band or Swing era of the 30’s.  About this time, Miller began writing charts that would be his band’s stock in fame, the clarinet lead sound over the saxophones.  Miller’s imagination, strong will, and determination kept his aspirations alive.  His music, a mixture of swing, jazz, and improvisation, flowed so smoothly with matchless hits, such as “String of Pearls,” “Moonlight Serenade,” “In the Mood,” and many others.  The constant radio broadcasts plus the drawing power at dances built and sustained Miller’s popularity.

Sadly, Glenn Miller disappeared during World War II while flying to Paris from England in a military transport. He was a great supporter of the Allied troops with his band and its music.

Filled with great music, a star-studded cast and nostalgia, “The Glenn Miller Story” is a great way to spend an afternoon. There is no charge, although donations are most welcome.
