“Seabiscuit” tells the story of a small horse who did not have much going for himself except his speed.  After losing 17 races, he was bought by Charles Howard (played by Jeff Bridges), trained by Tom Smith (played by Chris Cooper), and ridden by Red Pollard (played by Tobey Maguire.)  America was in the throes of the Depression and needed a “shot in the arm.”  If Seabiscuit–always the underdog–could win against larger and more famous horses, then there was a chance for everyone.

After a family tragedy, Charles Howard becomes a horse owner and breeder.  His trainer, Tom Smith, has great faith in a little horse named Seabiscuit, because of Seabiscuit’s big heart.  The movie’s races are thrilling and give a sense of the danger and difficulty in riding one of these grand animals.

After Seabiscuit defeats all the champion horses of the West, Charles Howard begins a strategy to force a match race between his horse and War Admiral, the East coast champion and Triple Crown winner.  After building up tremendous public support for this historic race, Charles Howard and his horse Seabiscuit get “the race of the century.”  The largest audience in American history heard the radio broadcast of this historic race.

Seabiscuit is a wonderfully thrilling movie!  Mark your calendars for Tuesday, April 11, and come cheer the little underdog to victory.
