The Blackhawk Area Council of Boy Scouts has four new computers to donate to local, non-profit youth organizations. They are looking for recipients.
The 28 Boy Scouts who recently built the four computers decided to donate these new, desktop PC’s to local non-profit groups that serve area children. As a result of their generosity, the Scouts received the Messenger of Peace Award.
The boys first took apart old computers to learn about the components inside. Jeff Garcea of Garcea Technologies in Rockford, IL, supervised the process and demystified the computer technology. Then he helped the Scouts assemble new desktop computers from kits.
Garcea said, “It is always fun working with kids, and there is not enough emphasis on working with your hands. Most people hire someone to do their repairs, because they do not have the skills to do it themselves. I think there needs to be more emphasis on basic skills and knowing how to fix things when they break.”
Youth organizations that are interested in receiving one of the new PC’s should send a letter to the Blackhawk Area Council stating their need. All requests must be received by November 15, 2016. The Scouts that built the computers will review the letters and select the recipients.
