Odell Library’s November Film: Driving Miss Daisy

November 8, 2016, is not only Election Day, but also Odell Public Library’s Film Day. Come out to vote and visit Odell for “Driving Miss Daisy,” a film of great love and patience.  This film stars Jessica Tandy and Morgan Freeman.  The story covers many years in the lives of Miss Daisy Werthan, a proud old Southern lady, and Hoke Colburn, her chauffeur.

“Driving Miss Daisy” spans over 25 years in their lives. Starting in 1948, Miss Daisy’s son decides it’s time to stop driving herself and employ a chauffeur. Ending in 1973, these two people recognize the bond that has grown between them. Truly this film looks into their hearts, showing the love there.

The movie contains two outstanding performances by Morgan Freeman (as Hoke) and Jessica Tandy (Miss Daisy), who at the age of 80 in this film. As the movie opens, Miss Daisy is still living self-sufficiently, with only her cook to help out. Around town she drives herself in a big, new 1948 Packard. One day she drives the Packard over the wall and into her neighbor’s yard.

Her son lays down the law:  “It is time for a chauffeur.” Poor Miss Daisy refuses this idea, but her son hires a chauffeur anyway. Daisy’s son tells Hoke to convince Miss Daisy to let herself be driven. This scene sets up a battle of wills that continues for 25 years. As two stubborn and proud old people learn to exist with one another, they learn about each other.

Alfred Uhry, author of both the play and screenplay, based the story on memories of his grandmother and family chauffeur. As members of the audience, we are privileged to see one of the mysteries of life:  the moment when two people allow each other to see inside.
