The iconic Annan Mill, rising four stories above Rock Creek on the Lincoln Highway, is now owned by Morrison Historical Society. Title was signed December 17, 2015, by our generous benefactor, former Morrison resident Brent Sikkema.
He stated his donation is “in memory of my great-grandmother, Ada Beswick, who lived to age 106.”
Built in 1858 in Unionville by William Annan and John Robertson, the grist mill opened the winter of 1859. It was crafted of fine, local sandstone; walls are two feet thick. Heavy timbers were cut from oak and walnut trees, expertly fitted with nothing more than pegs (tree nails.)
Annan Mill is one of only two or three Illinois stone mills standing.
Using turbine power, it was noted for turning out an excellent grade of wheat and buckwheat flour, whole wheat breakfast food, and cornmeal. These products were famed over much of the northern portion of the Illinois. Farmers came from distant points along the Mississippi River to the west and from Ashton, Franklin Grove, and Lee County towns to the east. Many traveled as much as 50 miles to reach Annan Mill.
Annan Mill had capacity of 40 barrels of flour in a 24-hour day. Frequently on a round-the-clock schedule, customers slept in nearby cabins as they awaited their turn. Milling continued on Sundays during the busy season.
Its new roles will be a
- museum of farming, agricultural methods, and the evolution of grains for educational purposes
- setting for artistic endeavors
- public venue for events, meetings, and social gatherings.
In addition, Annan Mill Museum will become an important tourist destination along the “Northern Illinois Grain Trail,” ranging from DeKalb, to Moline, IL. Other noteworthy stops include Franklin Grove, Grand Detour, Dixon, Sterling, and Fulton. An increase in tourism through this area will be developed.
