Blame it on recent heavy snowfalls and sub-zero temperatures. Illinois Department of Transportation employees have been unable to install all of approximately 900 new 70 miles per hour speed limit signs, to meet their Friday, January 17, 2014, deadline. Legislation went into effect–sort of–on Wednesday, January 1, allowing the increased speed on rural interstate highways. Here’s the catch: You are not permitted to travel at the new limit unless signs of 70 MPH are posted. So, to avoid a citation, slow down until the signage is installed.
