Morrison Cub Scout Pack 328 held the annual Pinewood Derby, on Saturday, January 13, 2023, in Fellowship Hall of Morrison United Methodist Church, 200 W. Lincolnway, Morrison, IL. Scout Master Eric Anderson stated the Pine Wood Derby likely began when Cub Scouting did, in 1930. At that time is was called “Cubbing.” Cub Scouts is for boys and girls in Kindergarten through Grade 5. In 2022 Morrison Cub Scouts celebrated 65 years as a Pack.
The event began with the Pledge of Allegiance, Scout’s Promise, and Scout’s Oath. Pack Leader Marshall Blevins leads the Oath.
Thirteen youngsters competed with pine cars they designed and constructed; a kit is the easiest format. There are specific instructions, even after decades of Pinewood Derbies, so an adult is useful.
Wait times were eased by activities, watching, and snacks.
Last year, Isaac entered the derby. Now that he has bridged to Scouts BSA, he volunteered to be the Master of Ceremonies for the event. There were multiple heats, and all were displayed electronically on his tablet screen, as well as a wall to his left. Winners are printed below. Cubs and parents gathered equipment and returned several items to their storage location; put eight chairs around each church table; some took home a few balloons.
