2019 Holy Week Services and Cross Walk

The annual ecumenical Community Cross Walk is Good Friday, April 19, 2019, beginning at 12:15 p.m. at Resthave Care & Rehabilitation, 408 Maple Avenue, Morrison, IL, and continuing to Pleasant View Rehabilitation & Health Care Center, 500 N. Jackson Street.  Pastor Jon Eastlick (Crossroads Community Church) will speak at Resthave; Father James Brzezinski (The Church of Saint Anne) will speak at Pleasant View.  The public is invited to walk with others or watch the procession.

2019 Holy Week Services are listed below for 16 Morrison, IL, churches.  Know that each welcomes new and long-time residents–as well as visitors–to attend.

Editor’s note:  “The Entry into Jerusalem” was painted in about 1305 by Giotto di Bondome (1266-1337.)  Giotto was an Italian painter and architect from Florence, Italy, during the Late Middle Ages.  He worked during the Gothic-Proto-Renaissance period.  This painting appears in the Arena Chapel, also known as the Scrovegni Chapel, in Padua, Italy.  Note the baby donkey.

Bethesda Lutheran Church, 301 W. South Street, will hold Palm Sunday Worship service with palm procession, on April 14, at 9:00 a.m.  Maundy Thursday, April 18, service is at 7:00 p.m. with Holy Communion celebrated and Stripping of the Altar, symbolically representing Christ being stripped of his power and handed over to his captors.  Good Friday Worship is April 19, at 7:00 p.m.  Easter Morning Worship, Sunday, April 21, is at 9:00 a.m., with Holy Communion and the choir and coffee afterwards.  Children in grades six and under will have an Egg Hunt.

Brethren in Christ Church, 209 E. Knox Street, will hold a Maundy Thursday, April 18, Foot Washing service at 6:00 p.m., followed by a free meal.  The public and congregants are invited to attend just the meal, if desired.  On Sunday, April 21, “Sonrise” service is at 8:00 a.m., followed by a free, potluck, community brunch at 8:45.  Resurrection service is at 10:00 a.m.

Crossroads Community Church, MIT Auditorium, 701 Portland Avenue, will offer 10:00 a.m. worship on Easter Sunday, April 21.

Ebenezer Reformed Church, 309 E. Park Street, will hold a Palm Sunday, April 14, Children’s Parade service at 9:30 a.m.; coffee and pastries will be served afterwards.  Maundy Thursday, April 18, services begin at 6:00 p.m. and include a light supper and Holy Communion.  Coffee and pastries will be served at 8:30 a.m., before the Easter Sunday, April 21, service at 9:30.  Music will feature the Celebration Choir; fellowship will follow.  There also will be a children’s Egg Hunt after the service.

Emmanuel Reformed Church, 202 E. Morris Street, will hold an April 14, 9:00 a.m., Palm Sunday service with Choir anthems, Praise Team, and Palm Processional.  Maundy Thursday, at 7:00 p.m. on April 18, celebrates with a Tenabrae service.  On Easter Sunday, April 21, worship service is at 9:00 a.m. and includes music by the Praise Team and Choir.

First Baptist Church, 406 Maple Avenue, celebrates Palm Sunday, April 14, at 10:00 a.m. with a procession.  On Easter Sunday, April 21, children’s Sunday School will meet at 9:00; the worship service is at 10:00 a.m.

First Presbyterian Church of Morrison, 100 E. Lincolnway, will hold an April 14, Palm Sunday service at 10:15 a.m. with a procession.  Maundy Thursday, April 18, services are at 7:00 p.m. and include Holy Communion.  There is a 7:00 p.m., April 19, Good Friday service.  Easter Sunday, April 21, service is at 10:15 a.m.

Morrison Christian Church, 201 S. Genesee Street, will celebrate the Resurrection of Christ on Easter Sunday, April 21, at 10:00 a.m.

Thrive Morrison Christian Reformed Church, 300 W. South Street, will hold Sunday, April 14, Palm Sunday service at 8:45 a.m.  Thursday, April 18, Maundy Communion Service will be held at Bethel Christian Reformed Church, 1208 3rd Avenue, Fulton, IL , at 7:00 p.m.  On Easter Sunday, April 21, service is at 8:45 a.m.

Morrison United Methodist Church, 200 W. Lincolnway, will hold April 14, Palm Sunday, services at 8:00 and 10:15 a.m., with palms at both.  On Maundy Thursday, April 18, a 7:00 p.m. Tenebrae service includes Holy Communion.  Good Friday, April 19, the sanctuary will be open for quiet reflection and prayer from noon to 3:00 p.m.  On Holy Saturday, April 20, there will be a service at 5:30 p.m.  There will be three Easter morning services on Sunday, April 21:  6:30-to-7:00 a.m. “Sonrise” Service outside, if weather is conducive, otherwise in the sanctuary, with continental breakfast following; at 8:00 and 10:15.  Sunday School is at 9:00 a.m.

Kingdom Life Community Church, 11429 Ward Road, will have coffee available at 7:45 a.m., on Sunday, April 21; children’s Sunday School begins at 8:45.  Easter services start at 10:00.  Holy Communion is available every Sunday.

Our Savior Lutheran Church LCMS, 21496 Hazel Road, will hold April 14, Palm Sunday services at 9:00 a.m., followed by potluck breakfast at 10:00.  Maundy Thursday, April 18, services and Holy Communion begin at 7:00 p.m.  Easter Sunday service, April 21, is at 9:00 a.m., and includes special hymns.  Coffee and treats follow every service.

The Church of Saint Anne, 401 N. Cherry Street, offers 9:00 a.m. April 14, Palm Sunday, Liturgy of the Palms where everyone processes, and Holy Eucharist, followed by coffee hour.  On Wednesday, April 17, at 5:30 p.m., Holy Eucharist is followed by 6:30 Soup Supper and 7:00 final presentation on “The Mass.”  Maundy Thursday, April 18, includes at 5:30 p.m. Holy Eucharist with Washing of Feet, Stripping of the Altar, The Watch at the Altar of Repose, and Maundy Thursday Potluck following the service.  On Good Friday, April 19, at 8:00 a.m., The Watch ends with Stations of the Cross; at 5:30 p.m. is The Veneration of the Cross and the Mass of the Pre-Sanctified.  On Holy Saturday, April 20, at 5:30 p.m., The Great Vigil of Easter, The Holy Eucharist, begins with The Lighting of the New Fire and the Paschal Candle.  On Easter Sunday, April 21, The Resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ, Solemn Holy Eucharist, begins at 9:00 a.m.

St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 13320 Garden Plain Road, will hold a Palm Sunday Vigil Mass on Saturday, April 13, at 5:30 p.m.  Palm Sunday Mass is also Sunday, April 14, at 9:00 a.m. with palms.  April 18, Holy Thursday Mass of the Lord’s Supper is at 6:30 p.m., followed by Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament until 10:00 p.m.  Good Friday, April 19, Solemn Liturgical Service of the Passion is at 12:15 p.m., with Stations of the Cross at 6:00 p.m.  Holy Saturday Easter Vigil Mass, on April 20, is at 7:30 p.m.  Easter Sunday Resurrection of the Lord Mass, April 21, is at 9:00 a.m.  On Divine Mercy Saturday, April 27, there will be a Vigil Mass at 5:30 p.m.  On Divine Mercy Sunday, April 28, there will be a Mass at 9:00 a.m., and Concessions and Adorations will be held at 2:00 p.m.  Holy Communion is offered at all masses.

St. Peter Evangelical Lutheran Church LCMS, 601 N. Jackson Street, celebrates Palm Sunday and Confirmation Sunday on April 14, at 10:45 a.m., with Sunday School children singing and processing with palms.  April 18, Maundy Thursday, services begin at 7:00 p.m. with Holy Communion celebrated.  Good Friday service is April 19, at 7:00 p.m. and includes Stripping of the Altar.  On Sunday, April 21, the sunrise service is at 7:00 a.m., beginning with the Adornment of the Altar and special music.  The service is followed by breakfast from 8:00-to-9:15; there is also a 9:30 service.  There will be no Sunday School.  Northern Illinois District President, the Rev. Dr. Alan Buss, will officiate at services on Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Easter.

Spring Valley Reformed Church, 10960 Spring Valley Road, offers an April 14, Palm Sunday, celebration at 9:30 a.m., with children processing.  The April 19, Good Friday, Tenebrae service begins at 7:00 p.m.  Easter Sunday, April 21, service is at 9:30 a.m. and offers Holy Communion; coffee hour follows.
