The American Legion Post 328 will conduct the annual Veterans Day ceremony, in Grove Hill Cemetery on E. High Street, Morrison, IL, on Sunday, November 11, 2018, beginning at 10:50 a.m.  Community members are invited to attend the short ceremony at the Veteran’s Park and Memorial.

Sergeant at Arms Jerry Brearton will offer a few opening remarks.

Attendees will face the east as a remembrance.  The WWI Armistice, or cease fire, was signed on the 11th day, of the 11th month, at the 11th hour, in 1918.  At that time, bells rang throughout the world celebrating the end of this “War to End All Wars.”  Americans were taught to face the east during Veterans Day tributes, looking from North America toward Europe, where most of the war took place and ended.

At 11:00, First Assistant Fire Chief Joe Bielema will activate the City-wide siren for a one-minute, silent tribute.  Others across town also can ponder the service of veterans.

The rifle salute will include a Three Volley Salute, followed by the playing of Taps by Morrison’s Carolyn Aiken.

Aiken plays “Taps” in numerous Northwest Illinois counties for Memorial and Veterans Day ceremonies, flag burnings, and funerals.  Requests can be made by calling her at 815-772-4393.

Visitors may linger to view names of departed veterans on the 14 granite memorial tablets.  There are 520 Morrison veterans‘ names engraved in a communal display.
