From Thursday, July 17, through Saturday, July 19, 2014, 4-H club members were showcased at the Whiteside County 4-H Show. Youth gathered at the Whiteside County Fairgrounds in Morrison, IL, to display their year-long projects for judging. The 4-H program offers a plethora of interest categories to nurture interests–from knitting to welding, from video to agriculture, from performing arts to robotics.
Best of Show Winners and Champions are listed at the end of the article.
MaryKate Jacobs, 8, entered her peach pillow in the Sewing & Textiles category. She took home the Top Junior Exhibitor ribbon. Illustrative photographs clarified the multi-step process to make this clever cupcake caterpillar. It was entered by Jenna Anderson in the DYOT, foods category.
These Original Class/Plastic entries featured a clever spoon wreath and a “look-of-art-glass” serving place. Child safety was the focus of this attractive toy display, created by Faith Green, age 9. Any toy that fit into the “Choke Tube” was unsafe for little ones.
Living projects included the raising and showing of hogs, cattle, rabbits, chickens, and plants. Individual project judging took place on Saturday, July 19. Three barrows and gelds (castrated hogs) are shown below in the ring. The judge commented on the techniques of the handlers who guided the animals around the enclosure. One boy was advised to not tap his animal quite so often, only when needed to steer it.
On Friday, July 18, five hours were aside to “Paint the 4-H Show.” Sidewalks boasted colorful representations of “What 4-H Means to Me.”
In the grandstand from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 19, important culminating activities took place. There was the club parade down the track, and several 4-Hers received achievement recognitions. Then came the live auction, or Sale of Champions. Boys and girls sold their livestock and projects to enthusiastic bidders.
Craft and Vendor Day added to the show on Saturday, July 19, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Two-year-old Isaac, at left, thought the silverware wind chime was intriguing.
The 4-H’ers competed for glory and prizes in the Club Olympics from 2:00 to 4:00.
As the group’s yearly fundraiser, the Federation Barbecue was held from 4:30 to 7:00.
The final day of the 4-H Show concluded with musical entertainment from 8:00 to 10:00 by “Route 88.” This local band filled the fairgrounds with sounds of the 60’s, 70’s, and 80’s.
