Many community members have started to hear the buzz about a new community event coming to Morrison in October 2009. This event will be proclaimed as Morrison’s first “Pink Weekend!” It promises to build cancer awareness, honor survivors, remember loved ones whom have passed, and raise money to benefit the community. It is “The Big SQUEEZE!” What started out as simply an idea discussed amongst a group of local women will now become a two day event enjoyed by the Morrison Community and surrounding areas. Kai Conway, Ann Slavin, Kelly Vegter, Kathy Schmidt, Betty Steinert, and Becky Reilly decided to take their passion for cancer awareness and turn it into a great cause that will benefit the community.
“We decided to put together a fun event that would raise awareness about breast cancer while benefiting our community. If our efforts help to save one life, it will be well worth our while. Our committee wanted to make the biggest impact that we could, so that is why we chose to keep the funds local and donate them to the Morrison Community Hospital,” said Kai Conway.
All proceeds of the event will be earmarked to assist the Morrison Community Hospital with upgrading to digital mammography and providing free mammography screenings for qualifying patients who are in need. The number of free mammography screenings will be determined by the funds received.
”You can imagine my surprise and how excited I was when this group approached the hospital about their idea. Their passion to bring awareness of the benefits of early prevention and detection of cancer is admirable. MCH’s Radiology Department has always been chosen by area residents for its compassionate staff and soon we will be able to offer our patients upgraded technology as well. We are confident that this will bring new patients that would like to support our local community hospital,” said Chad Haskell, MCH Director of Communication.
“The Big SQUEEZE” will take place on October 2nd and October 3rd at the Prairie Ridge Golf Course in Morrison, IL. The event will consist of a high tea on October 2nd followed by a family walk, golf scramble, cocktail party, auction, and Creative Cups for a Cause Fashion Show on October 3rd. There will be many ways that individuals can participate and help raise awareness for the event. More information and registration will be released soon. Please contact a committee member or Chad Haskell to find out how you may help the cause! Chad Haskell may be reached at 815-772-5510.
