Second Dairy Webinar Set

Registration is now open for a second dairy "webinar, " this one focusing on heifer management, sponsored by University of Illinois Extension.

The program will be offered from noon to 1 p.m. on April 8, said Mike Hutjens, U of I Extension dairy specialist.

"The webinar, 'Managing the Dairy Replacement Herd,' is designed to address the importance of and renewed interest in heifer management," said Hutjens. "The need stems from higher costs associated with raising heifers, the increased demand for higher milk production in younger cows, and the need to improve dairy cow longevity resulting in greater total productive life."

Joining Hutjens in presenting the 40-minute program will be Dave Fischer, U of I Extension dairy educator who will serve as lead instructor, and Dick Wallace, U of I Extension dairy veterinarian.

To register for the April 8 program, go to Managing the Dairy Replacement Herd website. No registration fee is required.

Sixty-eight participants attended the first webinar held on March 20, Hutjens reported.

"That program focused on feeding strategies with today's low milk prices," he said. "Those who attended were looking for any and all methods to reduce input costs in the wake of milk prices dropping over $6 per 100 pounds.

"Dairy farmers are currently producing milk at below breakeven prices."
