Family Reading Night at Northside School

Family Reading Night at Northside School will be held Thursday, November 20, 2008 from 5:30 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. Local author Wally Kilgus will be reading his books at 6:00 p.m.

Family Reading Night is a statewide event sponsored by the Secretary of State and the Illinois State Library. This event is designed to encourage families to spend an evening together reading. “Reading with your child is the best gift any parent can give,” as reported by the National Academy of Education commission on Reading. “Reading, whether by parents, librarians, grandparents or the children themselves, encourages emotional development as a child learns to share in another’s happiness or misfortune, broadening interest beyond themselves.”

Family Reading Night is just a one-night event but it is our hope that you will continue the idea of setting aside some time each week to read as a family. Children need to see that reading is something that even adults must do and enjoy doing. The school has planned special things during the week.

Please see the list of activities listed below:

November 19 -Wednesday: READING TAKES TEAMWORK AND PRACTICE: Wear clothes showing off your favorite sports team.

November 20 -Thursday: HATS OFF TO READING: Wear your craziest or favorite hat.
Local author Wally Kilgus will be here at 6:00 p.m. to share his books with the children. If you made a family book in September, we will give you an opportunity to share it on Thursday evening. If you didn't make a book in September, we will have supplies out so you can start one on Thursday night.

We will also be giving away some Eric Carle stuffed animals and books. We hope to see you on Nov. 20th.
