The History of the Wooden Shoe Bowl |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
The Wooden Shoe Traveling Trophy was the idea of 1977 MHS sophomore football coaches, Gus Linke and Ron Roels. The purpose was to provide motivation to the intense football rivalry and lend a sportsmanship flavor to the strong Dutch heritage of both communities. At the request of coach Gus Linke, shop teacher, Vic Zander built the base. Linke then obtained a wooden shoe from MHS custodian Ralph Keiser. He sanded, stained and varnished the pieces. The trophy took its final form after Linke had Rod Fitch's sporting goods attach a football trophy and gold plates for yearly scores. In October of 1977, at MHS, the first presentation was made to Fulton head coach, Dale Geisler and his staff for their teams' 38-6 victory over the Mustangs. Since the first presentation, the teams have played 31 times, Morrison leads "The Wooden Shoe Bowl" series 21 victories to 10.
