Fourteen Students Inducted into National Honor Society

Morrison High School held its annual National Honor Society Induction Ceremony on Wednesday evening, April 2, 2008, in the auditorium. Fourteen new members were inducted into the Society.

Principal Janet Ward welcomed the audience and introduced the current MHS Honor Society members. Those members are: Alyssa Barnett, Michael Benson, Taylor Boyles, Bethany Gravert, Ashley Hook, Abram Houzenga, Sydnee Ivey, Brianne Janssen, Brandy McCrary, Ashlie Patten, Kelsey Rickels, Jessica Scott, Brianna Simpson, Michael Stralow and Nathan Vandermyde.

Brianne Janssen introduced the music performances for the evening which included singer Taylor Boyles accompanied by Darlene Palmer. Ashley Hook played a selection on the flute accompanied by Cynthia Perrizo, and Kelsey Rickels performed a dance routine to “Wild Horses.”

Michael Benson explained the “Purpose” of the National Honor Society, which is founded upon the principles of scholarship, leadership, service and character. Abe Houzenga lit the center white candle.

The red candle of “Service” symbolizes unselfish devotion, which gives itself to the service of one’s home, church, and nation. Ashley Hook and Kayla VenHuizen presented this candle.

Nathan Vandermyde and Kelsey Rickels presented the blue “Leadership” candle that represents the royal aspect of leadership.

Alyssa Barnett and Taylor Boyles presented the gold “Scholarship” candle that symbolizes the light of knowledge as it shines in the darkness of ignorance.

The white “Character” candle was presented by Jessica Scott and Brianna Simpson. This candle represents Purity, which symbolizes character for which everyone in your society must strive.

An introduction of the new members was given by Brandy McCrary. Ashlie Patten draped an honor chord around the neck of each inductee and handed them a certificate.

New members of the Morrison High School Honor Society are: Luke Barry, Nora Beswick, Amber Francque, Curtis Fuller, Ethan Goodenough, Cassandra Heusinkveld, Meghan Houzenga, Steven Karvelius, Samantha Mapes, Mitchell Nienhuis, Katie Sedig, Mathew Vegter, Kayla VenHuizen and Victoria Volckmann.

Michael Stralow led the students in the National Honor Society Pledge:
I pledge myself always to seek the light of truth, to hold scholarly habits, to engage in worthy service and to lead forward to all things that shall advance the welfare of the school.

Bethany Gravert closed the ceremony by thanking everyone for attending and invited them to stay for refreshments in the cafeteria.
