NIU Student Sarah Weets Tells Her Experience

The Morrison Post

Sarah Weets, NIU student and part-time Shawver Press/The Morrison Post employee stopped by the office on Friday, February 15 to let us know that she was OK following the school shootings on Thursday, February 14. Even though we had received word that she was OK it was great to see her walk through the door.

Sarah was in the Student Center approximately 100 yards from Cole Hall when the lights went out. A police officer came in and told everyone to get down on the floor, under tables and keep quiet.

“At that time I didn’t know about the shootings,” Sarah said. It wasn’t until later that they were told about the shootings. Sarah said, “As soon as I could go I went to my apartment, packed my bags and headed for home. Several roads were still closed and the police checked me through.”

She returned to NIU, with family and friends, for the Friday Night Candlelight vigil and then back home to Morrison.

She said she thought the police did a very good job and their response time was fast but feels all schools should heighten their security. She commented, “You just never know.”

Sarah concluded, “It’s all so surreal and I just want to get back on campus to be with the other students.”
