Morrison 5th Graders Empty Pockets to Help End World Hunger

What do a goat, a colony of honeybees, and a flock of chickens have in common?

These valuable items were donated to Heifer International by Mrs. Marie Popkins fifth grade class in December of 2007.

The twenty-nine students in Popkin’s class read an article regarding Heifer International in “Ranger Rick: magazine and learned about the important work the group undertakes in the global community. The students were inspired by the mission of the non-profit organization to end world hunger and decided to do something to help.

In less than one month, the class collected $171.00 in pennies to donate to the charitable organization. The money raised will be used by Heifer International to provide cows, goats, and other food-and income-producing livestock to impoverished families all over the world.

According to the Heifer International website, live stock recipients are trained in animal care and environmentally sound agricultural practices so they can lift themselves out of poverty and become self-reliant. Milk, eggs, wool, meat, draft power and other benefits of animals provide nutrition and money for education, better housing, health care, and small business enterprises.

Heifer partners with community groups that form a development plan with specific goals. Heifer also provides expertise in animal health, water quality, gender equity, the environment and community development.
