Southern Illinois Leadership Convention is New for 2007!

“Ahoy! A New World of Leadership!” is the theme for the first ever Southern Illinois Leadership Convention sponsored by University of Illinois Extension. The exciting convention is set for October 6-8, 2007, at Touch of Nature Environmental Center in beautiful Southern Illinois just south of Carbondale and is open to ANY high school student or teen in the state who is not yet 19 by September 1, 2007. To better prepare for modern leadership in today’s world, attendees will participate in workshops on identifying strengths and weaknesses in people, career exploration, appreciating diversity, communicating with difficult people, program planning, time and stress management, facilitating groups, and current leadership. They will also experience team building activities, dances, a mystery theater, and great speakers such as Curt Jones, the founder of Dippin’ Dots Ice Cream!

High school students need to prepare themselves for their futures, and learning leadership and citizenship skills is one way for them to do that, reports Jennifer Hunter with U of I Extension in Whiteside County. Cost is $120 if registered by August 31 and $140 by September 14, which includes lodging, meals, and all program activities.

The Southern Illinois Leadership Convention is for all Illinois high school students or teens not 19 by September 1, says Hunter. Youth do not have to be 4-H members to attend the convention. Convention staff includes Extension professionals, adult volunteers, and trained planning committee members.

For more details, contact the U of I Extension office in Morrison, 815-772-4075, or e-mail, jmhunter@uiuc.edu. Or, log on to Southern Illinois Leadership Convention.
