Less Expensive Homegrown Fuel Brings E85 to Morrison |
|
Responding to overwhelming requests from customers, Gold Star FS added E85, a new choice for area residents who want an Illinois made, environment-friendly, and less expensive fuel for their cars, trucks and SUVs. Gold Star FS, the American Lung Association of Illinois, the Department of Commerce & Economic Opportunity, the Illinois Corn Growers Association, the National Ethanol Vehicle Coalition, and the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency are providing an opportunity to receive information, ask questions, and learn more about E85 on Saturday, October 1, 2005 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. at the Gold Star FS located at 615 East Lincolnway, Morrison.
Gold Star FS sells this alternative to gasoline called E85, a blend of 85% ethanol and 15% gasoline that “flexible fuel vehicles” (FFVs) can use. Ethanol is made from corn, an abundant and a renewable resource. Using E85 instead of gasoline reduces greenhouse gas and tailpipe emissions, including ozone-forming pollutants & carbon monoxide, and lessens exposure to toxic chemicals, like benzene. There are more than 100,000 FFVs registered in Illinois, according to the American Lung Association of Illinois, who promote the use of E85 and other cleaner-burning fuels as a practical means of reducing air pollution statewide. FFVs are factory built to use E85 fuel (a mixture of 85% ethanol and 15% gasoline), 100% gasoline, or any blend of the two up to 85% ethanol. FFV vehicles look and cost the same as other vehicles of their class. The list of commonly available vehicles that can use E85 include many makes and models such as the Ford Explorer, Ford Taurus, GMC Suburban, GMC Tahoe, and Chevy Silverado. To see if your vehicle can use E85, look for a decal under the fuel door or check your owner’s manual. Additionally, a list of FFVs can be found at American Lung Association of Illinois-Iowa. Like gasoline, the price of E85 varies across refueling stations. According to Angela Tin, Director of Environmental Programs for the American Lung Association of Illinois, “E85 is often sold at prices comparable to or cheaper than regular unleaded gasoline, and burns cleaner than gasoline alone due to its high oxygen content. The price difference is due in part to the Illinois Sales Tax Exemption for E85 fuel signed by Governor Blagojevich in June 2003”. Besides Morrison, E85 is sold in over 70 communities from Chicago to Waterloo, including communities such as Springfield, Bloomington, Decatur, Lincoln, Shelbyville, Taylorville, Harrisburg and Princeton. For a complete listing of stations that sell E85 fuel, call 217-787-5864 or visit American Lung Association of Illinois-Iowa. For a printable copy of the announcement put out by Goldstar F.S.
