National Honor Society inducts 2004 members

Junior Class members inducted into the National Honor Society Tuesday night.

Most of Morrison’s best students gathered Tuesday evening for the induction of the National Honor Societies’ new members. Four seniors and twelve juniors were inducted in the ceremony. The previously inducted eleven members conducted the formal procedure.

Current members Merrie Bunt and Sarah Drey introduced the National Honor Society and their purpose. Afterwards Kelly Oudekerk, Emily Frederick, Megan Goodenough, Amber Heller, Kelli Nelson, Jessica Boelkins, Tricia Deter, and Joe Mills lit the candles for National Honor Society and explained the four basic parts: Scholarship, Service, Leadership, and Character.

All new members must have a minimum academic grade point average of 3.5 on a 4-point scale. They also must be involved in the school and the community. New members must be involved in at least four school related activities in addition to two activities outside school. Leadership in and out of the classroom, responsibility, and a positive attitude must also be demonstrated. The last prerequisite is character; members must not be involved in any civil or criminal activities, no record of cheating or dishonesty. But they must be positive, cooperative and have good ethics.

The students must fill out a form with signatures showing participation, then the teachers vote on admission. Gerry Elfline, Jan Horberg, Patrice Johannsen, Jessica White, and Gwen Rickertsen are the staff sponsors for this event.

During the ceremony band members Merrie Bunt and Ryan Damhoff performed their instruments with Connie Swanson-DeSpain as accompanist.

Senior members inducted were: Britta Bartels, Heidi Benson, Jacob Medendorp, and Jodi Vandermyde. Junior class members were: Stacy Belha, Casey Beswick, Rachel Fedyk, Larry Gatz, Cassie Hanson, Kendal McDearmon, Laura Prange, Amanda Smith, Brittany Smith, Megan Tenboer, Bert Thorndike, and Doug Vandermyde.
