When asked what he was going to do in retirement, Ron Billings replied, “Whatever I want to!” Last Friday, October 31, was not scary for a group of General Electric employees, they were all “very happy” because they were celebrating their retirement from the Morrison plant. Two hundred fifty non-union G.E. employees from all over were offered early retirement packages. The Morrison plant led the way with thirty-three retirees. The average employee had 34-1/2 years in G.E. A crowded party was held at Sunset Woods Friday afternoon to honor the retirees.
There are also thirty-three “very happy” laid-off workers that have been called back to fill those positions.
Phil Garrison, a 36 year screw machine and tapper operator, was given a basket of laundry by his wife’s co-workers because in his retirement they plan on having him do their laundry, wash and wax their cars. Carol Onken said she had over 30 years of housekeeping to do but also planned on continuing her quilting and traveling. Denny Zickert was leaving Friday afternoon to elk hunt. Sue Larson, a 35-year employee, plans to baby-sit her first grandchild. Others retirees plan to golf, or doing woodworking.
