Great Pumpkin Patch Opens

Pumpkins for sale at The Great Pumpkin Patch.

Ride the train at The Great Pumpkin Patch.

The Great Pumpkin Patch opens this weekend in Lyndon. If you’ve never been there, it’s worth a ride especially if you have young children. It’s always fun to visit a farm in the fall and the Zelinski family opens theirs to everyone and just like most farms, there is plenty to do here. Train rides, haunted house, corn and straw maze and farm animals are just some.

The train ride takes you through the trees and has scenes from an old mining town. They added a tunnel, a general store and a main street to the ride this year Tom Zelinski built the train and modeled it after a 1940 Baldwin switcher. The engine for the train came out of a street sweeper.

Local farm animals are displayed in pens and cages. They have bunnies, goats (they are expecting young ones soon), chickens, and cats. A calf and peacocks are coming soon. There’s a not-so-scary haunted house (unless you’re afraid of the dark). October 18, 25, and 31, live actors will be in the house. The straw maze has been redone this year to make it more complicated. After all that you can sit down with a fresh baked pumpkin pie before you pick out a pumpkin to take home to decorate. They raise all kinds and sizes of pumpkins: pie, mini, giant, white and even green.

The admission is free to enter the Zelinski farm but several of the entertainment items, like the train and haunted house, require tickets. Discounts if you purchase a package. Call for group rates. The Great Pumpkin Patch is on Black Road just north of Interstate 88 and to the east of Route 78. They are open every day 10:00 am until 8:00 pm starting September 13 until October 31. You can email Sandy Zelinski at thegreatpumpkinpatch@yahoo.com.
