A Dragon in the Cornfield |
|
|
What is a dragon doing in the middle of a Whiteside County cornfield? The “Dirty Dragon” is this year’s theme for Blue Goose Run and the Illinois Corn Maze. So what is the "Dirty Dragon”? Kurt Stutzke, owner of Blue Goose Run, explained the “BJ and the Dirty Dragon” was the number-one children’s show in the Chicago area in the 70’s and 80’s. The show was syndicated as far east as Dixon. Kurt’s biggest supporter, his sister Cheryl, works in Chicago TV and was employed by the show. She coordinated with legendary Children’s TV star, Bill Jackson, to design the maze. This is the third year for the Illinois Corn Maze. Like in years past, there will be check-points to stamp passports and prizes will be awarded. The average time to collect all 7 points is 1-1/2 hours. But this year, changes have been made. Kurt has built a gift shop with snacks and drinks, candles, food mixes, books, and other gift items. 80 percent of the Illinois Corn Maze’s business is through tourists. Schools bus their students from as far away as Lena. The kids love to run through the maze and schools or other groups get a group rate. His new restaurant facility is poised to open with Sunday Champaign Brunches on September 21. Currently Stutzke has the facility open on Thursday nights for Karaoke featuring Mic-N-Me starting at 8:30 p.m. until 12:30 a.m. From 6:00 to 10:00 p.m. a fine burger menu has been added, with Black Angus burgers with names like Whiteside Landfill (all the junk on it), Cow Pie, Mississippi Mud, Mexican, and California. They also have a hot dog named Junk Yard Dog. Last week they hosted over 100 customers on Karaoke Thursday. Weekend food service will be added soon.
