Farmers and agriculture dealers in northern Illinois should mark their calendar for the “2010 Alfalfa Workshop--Positioning for Success” on February 8, 2010. The program is from 9:25 a.m. to 12:00 Noon and will be delivered via teleconference at participating University of Illinois Extension offices. Registration begins at 9:00 a.m. Alfalfa growers, dealers and consultants will hear about current production and tips for successful stand establishment strategies that impact the profitability of growing alfalfa. Also addressed will be Harvesting Biomass Crops--equipment and practices for switchgrass, miscanthus, and corn stalks. Specific topics include reduced-lignin alfalfa, red clover persistence, and protein utilization; pros and cons of, "How do I decide which is best for my operation?"; harvesting biomass crops; key factors or steps that improve the chances for a vigorous stand.Leading the discussion will be Kevin Shinners, Ag Engineer, University of Wisconsin-Madison; Neal Martin, Forage Agronomist, US Dairy Forage Research Center; Keith Johnson, Extension forage specialist, Purdue University; and Jim Endress, Extension Educator, Farm Management, University of Illinois.
