"Carpet: The key here is to vacuum regularly - daily is not too often, although it's unlikely many people do this. The reason for frequent vacuuming is that dirt works its way down into the fibers, making it more difficult to remove, and also because the silicon in dirt actually rips and tears at the tiny fibers in the carpet, causing it to wear faster. Spots should be cleaned immediately using a blotting action with a paper towel or soft cloth. 'Wipe spills when they happen,' (Loren) Baxter (owner of Creative Tile & Marble, Davenport) says. 'That sounds obvious but you'd be surprised how many people don't do it.' '"The biggest thing is, don't rub the spot in,' (Eric) Lingan of Carpetland, adds. 'And never use too much soap.' It's difficult to completely remove soap, and once it's in the carpet it actually attracts dirt. Baxter adds that most spots can be removed with only water. She recommends that carpets be cleaned every 18 months 'by someone who does hot water extraction.' She cautions against 'Rug Doctor' type vacuums because they leave too much moisture behind. 'If carpet takes three to four days to dry, you're going to have mold and if you can't stay off it, you're going to have tracking.'" - Gaul, Alma. (2004, April 4). Clean and Simple.
