Members of the Morrison Lions Club will hold a Pancake Breakfast on Saturday, March 23, 2013, in the Community Room at Odell Public Library, 307 S. Madison Street, Morrison, IL.  Serving will start at 6:30 and continue to 11:00 a.m.  Proceeds from this fundraiser will be split with the Morrison Seahorse Swim Club and Lions Club sight, hearing, and community projects.  The cost to attend is a free-will donation.  Carry-outs will also be available.

The menu will include pancakes, sausage, scrambled eggs, juice, and coffee.  Mark the date on your calendar to attend this event.  Support the Seahorse Swim Club as they raise funds to purchase a new display board for posting swimmers’ times and places during each event.

Support the Lions Club in their many visual- and hearing-assistance programs and various community projects.  The Seahorse Swim Club coached by Chelsea Brewer has again become an active and vibrant organization.  Morrison and outlying area children participate, competing against other swim clubs in the area.

altThe annual Rose Day sale has also begun, with lots of pretty colors available.  Place your order by Sunday, March 24.  The cost of a dozen roses is $15.  Delivery will be on Good Friday, March 29, and Saturday, March 30.  Easter is early this year, so remember to place your order with a Lions Club member.  If no one contacts you, call any Lions Club member or

  • Bob Smith at 815-499-9954
  • Jim Blakemore, 772-3744
  • Flora Stralow, 772-4874.

Proceeds from the Rose Day Sale support the annual $1,500 scholarship awarded to a Morrison High School graduating senior.

The club approved annual donations to Boy Scouts and Morison Little League.  Members also voted to pay for the repair of a vision machine used at Southside School.  A memorial donation was made to the Lions of Illinois Endowment Fund in memory of the late Roy Velde, a long-time member and past President.

Below, Lion President Bart Smith, left, is shown with Police Chief Brian Melton, program speaker for the February meeting and a member of the club.

Chief Brian Melton was in charge of the February program and provided the club with information about the Morrison Police Department.  He stated the crime rate has decreased each of the last two years and that Morrison is one of the lowest in the area of similar size towns.  Chief Melton stated he considers law enforcement as an investment in the community and referenced the tough economic times and how the budget can be a problem.  About five percent of the budget comes through fines and court costs, with the rest coming from the City.  One of his emphases, Operation Safe Passage, involves the safety of children walking to and from school.  This program has included trimming of bushes at corners, allowing drivers to better see children, and the reduction of the speed limit in the residential areas, from 30 MPH to 25.  The Morrison Police Department is on Facebook, which is a way of improving communication with the public.  He stated that he sees a trend in the increase in property crimes and pharmaceutical drugs.  He would like to see an additional officer employed to replace an officer who retired a few years ago.  He wants to continue improving school safety and is working at remodeling the Police Department area in City Hall, to make it more user-friendly.  Chief Melton answered questions from the members.  Thanks, Chief Melton, for being a Lion and Morrison Police Chief.

Our next meeting will be Tuesday, March 5, at noon at Happy Joe’s, 109 W. Main Street, Morrison, IL.  Tracy Muur is in charge of the program and will have Joan Hermes, CGH, for the program.

You are welcome to attend any of our meetings to learn more about Lions and our motto--“We Serve.”  The club’s website at www.e-clubhouse.org/sites/morrisonil will also provide you with information about the Lions and will show upcoming events on the calendar.
